And the majority, circa 99%, don't even know the meaning of the word. Like you, anyone using that word I immediately brand as an ignorant cretin. I do so enjoy asking said cretins what the word means, should they subject me to the utterance in a face-to-face conversation, and watching them stumble for an answer - for it amuses me.
