    (Adds statement from BHP)

BHP (BHP) , the company that runs Chile's Escondida mine, the world's largest copper mine, said on Monday it reached an agreement with a worker's union to avoid a strike planned for Nov. 21 and 23.

The agreement must still be approved by members of the union.

"Escondida | BHP and Union No. 1 built a proposal for the implementation of a series of productivity measures that benefits workers and the company, which is the result of dialogue held in recent weeks," BHP said in a statement.

"This proposal will be submitted to the consideration of the members of the union."

    Last week,

union members said that they would stop work on November 21 and 23 due to multiple "non-compliances, infractions and violations" mainly related to security.

At the beginning of September, unionized workers threatened to strike after complaints over safety, which

    led to government inspections

In its statement, BHP said that it has the highest

safety standards, and "the best collective agreement with its workers in the mining industry."
