As a point of comparison, consider Brookfield and EIG’s bid for Origin 13% bump in the price, to $28.25 a share Energy last week, widely described by Origin shareholders as a knockout offer.
That deal involved a premium to Origin’s last close of 50%, and a premium to the volume-weighted average price over the prior 30 days of 57%, while BHP’s bid for OZ Minerals is at premiums of 49% and 60% respectively.
Further, BHP is paying a price to net asset value multiple of 1.2 times for OZ, compared to the average multiple of 1 in big mining M&A deals in the past 3 years. The updated price also represents an enterprise value to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation multiple of 11.7 times, compared to 4.8 times in those recent deals.
Cheers
