Just to clarify...with the RCI/RCX you're technically moving hydrocarbons to surface but not in the same way as with a flow during a drill stem test.
With a wireline formation tester pressures are acquired by flowing formation fluid through a probe pushed against the borehole wall and into a small pretest chamber with a piston. The fluid fills the chamber and the piston moves back. The rate at which the piston moves tells you how fast the fluid is flowing into the chamber and also when the chamber is full. Once the pretest chamber is full, pressure then builds up and eventually stablizes at the reservoir pressure (assuming decent permeability). For sampling the flow is diverted from the tool flow line into a chamber or bottle(s). The flow usually passes through a fluid analyzer (IR based or similar) which gives information on type of fluid passing over the sensor.
