A Central Queensland gas pipeline and gas compression facility will have to undergo assessment and approval under the EPBC Act before it can go ahead.

A referral for the project, to be built 43 kilometres north of Moranbah, was lodged with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water in October.

The project is part of the Queensland Pacific Metals energy project which includes the construction of a gas compression facility and high pressure gas pipeline.

The project will link the proposed GCF to the nearby North Queensland Gas Pipeline.

According to the referral document, the proposed project would collect waste coal mine gas at the GCF via waste gathering lines at adjacent coal mines.

The waste gas would then be dehydrated and filtered at the GCF with the clean gas then being compressed and transported via the pipeline to the existing and operational NQGP before it’s transported north to Townsville.

Once in Townsville the gas would be depressurised and distributed to industrial users by a third party.
According to the referral, the project would be built over three stages to “match the ramp-up in demand for waste coal mine gas”.

The GCF is proposed to be built on Dabin Station, adjacent to the Goonyella Mine.

The pipeline will then run west of the GCF for 4.5km, then south for another 4.5km, before finally going west again for 8km to the hot tap for the NQGP.

Subject to relevant approvals, construction on the project is expected to begin in 2023 with works expected to take nine months.

The referral document says once complete, the design life of the project is expected to be about 25 years.
