All drilling, regardless of whether it is successful or not, adds to their knowledge of what is below the surface which then helps improve their accuracy in interpreting the seismic. Very useful for building a picture of what they have and increasing their chance of success for future wells. Obviously a discovery is the goal but the value of the information they gain also shouldn't be overlooked imo.
