I can assure you that buildings aren't built from 3d videos, but they are definitely built from the 3d models that are shown in those videos!

Like Bushturkey says, BIM modelling is how most structural and mechanical drawings are produced these days. I'm currently working on a $100m+ resource project, and all designwork is being done in a 3D BIM model. 2D construction drawings are produced in the very last stage and they are just sections taken from the model that are tidied up a little. By using the 3D BIM model, the software can make an entire schedule of parts - a register that tells you exactly how many structural members, footings, bolts, valves, etc that you need which assists greatly when it comes to procurement.

The pretty video is just a side product, and helps all stakeholders understand exactly what to expect from the project.

Just my opinion anyway - only chiming in because it is relevant to what I'm doing at the moment!
