Yes you wonder what possessed countries to let others hold their Au? Germany (or W Germany as it then was) was in a different position altogether being, to all intents and purposes, under the control of USA - still appears to be but things seem to be changing.

Do recall that the world's greatest treasurer (I would call him idiot), Peter Costello, sold over two-thirds of our Au reserves at around 450 dollars (AUD) per oz in 1997!! UK also sold off most of its Au reserves. The Chinese must have been laughing!! The Indians are likely still ROFL.

BTW I also recall that the Chinese hold their Au in several accounts but, from memory, only report 1 or 2 officially. At that time they were encoraging their people to invest in Au.
