One thing is not the other though they share the concept of selectivity. MRT is designed (or was initially anyway) for use in REE separation as the molecules envisioned are expensive to synthesize and would be much more quickly degraded by any attempt to use them during extraction. I used to synthesize and test metal chelators for HREEs and nuclear isotopes. I am not a believer that the miniscule differences in atomic radii or electronic states of REEs can be leveraged to produce effective economical and complete separation and am not invested. even at a loss
