Using container ships may be cheaper in nominal dollars, but not only does it take longer port to port than rail's terminal to terminal, but typically if using shipping, a consignor has to lodge the container a few days before the sailing date, and at the other end, picking up the container may take some time as well.
Container shipping is also subject to significant delays. Very unpredictable.
There aren't many voyages now from the east coast ports to Fremantle (Perth). COVID-19 vastly reduced this 'foreign flagged coastal shipping' trade.
