I don't want to give up 4 quarterly divvies. I bought in for the 15% return each quarter (plus the franking credits) and i've topped up both times come ex date. If it came down to a buy back or investment elsewhere, i'd favour the latter (assuming it was a sound investment).
I think one of the benefits of quarterly divvies is that we will get early warning of a shift to potential/ongoing returns.
There are rules regarding buybacks and to buy back half the SOI would take at least a year, who knows where the price of coal will be then?. NST (obviously not coal) have an on market buyback that is active for 12 months.
