The irony around energy and our carbon footprint is that either the government doesn't fully understand or they are just blinded by ideology.

I have done the calcs on various things. If you take ride to work day you are almost better off driving your car because there would be less CO2 produced and much less if car pooling. Because when you add in places like New York where food travels an average of around 2,000 miles, you soon figure out the energy needing to be consumed from food in CO2 terms for cycling soon outweighs the CO2 produced from the vehicle, and don't get me started on running. The variable they are really focused on is the number of people on the planet, which again goes back to ideology. If you understand that you will understand the psychology behind lockdowns and the minimize movement / minimize human impact side of things driving policy.

I like to look on the bright side, when you consider oil wells with the right geology refill over time, and there are many technologies that have been shown to either be extremely efficient or "renewable" / possibly perpetual, the future is quite exciting, but with free energy where would the taxes and control come from?!
