Theta has been discussed by a few posters thus far, you would be well advised to appreciate the time decay in the price of the option. Theta is a very real component of pricing.
The use of options or any derivative should involve a reasonably competent level of maths, if this is not your strongpoint then punting on leveraged hunches is pretty much the same as maxing your credit card at the casino as a cash advance.
Out of curiosity I would still love to see the workings as to why these puts were taken. What was the Theta and the Delta at the time that the puts were purchased? What did this chart look like? I know that I'm just an amateur however I have an open mind and I'm interested to learn more.
