You are correct...passengers lives were never in danger.
An engine failure on a 747 is not a drama, so long as you don't have an uncontained fire, or uncontained parting of fan blades etc. A 747 can take off on 3 engines, so landing on 3 is not an issue.
This issue was discussed on HC over Easter.
You're probably taking a bigger risk with that 16 year old van of yours than being on that 747.
