Hi Sewie,
I suppose I should be thankful that one was only 5 or 6 pages. I do have much better things to do including celebrating the latest announcement. A solid performance once again by Michael Goldsworthy and his team.
To be blunt you asked me how I would explain a "5 fold increase" and I did explain how that could occur
My answers were....
More reporting, Changing expectations and definitions, Better detection (satellites and radar), Expansion of humans into marginal areas, More expensive infrastructure to damage
Even the article you linked me to says one of the reasons for the increase is more reporting.
"The number of disasters has increased by a factor of five over the 50-year period, driven by climate change, more extreme weather and improved reporting"
That last paper you have linked talk about disasters not extreme weather events. There is a distinct difference. A disaster occurs where (mostly) humans or building meet a very extreme weather or geological event. A large cyclone in the middle of the Atlantic is not a disaster if it affects no people or infrastructure. The simply fact is both numbers of people and their locations have expanded dramatically over the last 50 years as well as the compexity of the infrastructure that surrounds them. This alone would lead to a spike in weather related damage even with NO increase in extreme events.
I just see all this stuff as "the sky is falling" type of propaganda and I believe it is doing huge amounts of damage to our youth with increased levels of anxiety and fear.
I answered your question and even your own quoted articles backed up my answer
Time to celebrate some laser milestones being met on time and do some more research on what may be the next exciting venture for silex
