While i agree that it takes time to learn 'coal' english (the same for gas that i work in), this is true in most industries for newcomers - english or foreigners. In my experience, their english is comparable or better in a short period of time and they learn much faster. Multi-lingual foreigners are specialists in language and communication and i have no doubt that they could learn 'coal mine english' (probably their 6th language) in a few months compared to the average single-language australian who would take several years as you say. ps. I am an australian with a basic grasp of a 2nd language.
