This depends entirely what the individual is tasked with doing. Certain areas inside an office (where the job is 100% desk based) are quicker and easier, yet as has been mentioned, driving on a haul road is often an accident waiting to happen. Effective communication is paramount and can't be washed over with bureaucratic safety rules... as they don't fix the problem of being able to communicate with the accent of the local dialect.

It works both ways. I'd personally have difficulty working on a copper mine in South America or a gold mine in PNG or Africa or a coal mine in Indonesia. In those countries, as a tech services worker, I'd be allocated a driver and be driven around, which is similar to what is done in the Australian industry for people who can't speak good communicative English on the radio. I'd be unlikely to land a job as a mobile plant operator overseas, even if I learnt the local language because I don't have a local accent/dialect and can't be understood on the radio. This is no different to Australia except that certain ignoramuses in Australian cities (with concentrations in the bhp head office, Melbourne) seem to believe that they are better than others and are allowed to implement systemically racist hiring practices which cause safety incidents.

Its pretty simple stuff and anyone who suggests otherwise is ignorant to the point that they're a safety hazard.
