There's a third option, not an ATO regulated SMSF, but one that essentially allows you control over where the money is invested via the same linked cash transaction accounts setup etc a SMSF.
It's an alternative to an SMSF for those wanting maximum control over where their money is being invested. You manage the portfolio and execute the trades etc, but it is still technically with the super fund so all the tedious reporting requirements lay with them.
I'd be interested to know if the same limits apply re: portfolio diversification and being too balls deep in one stock, when it's not as a SMSF.
Might be a potential loophole (love me a good loophole!)
