Most certainly wouldn't require a mathematical genius to realise that there's no point in picking up a few thousand votes if it's going to cost you a few million! ====================================
Why not, they are not spending their personal money,they are spending Aussie Taxpayer's money.
Didn't State labor in a recent election did something shonky in a marginal seat, to get a few extra votes.
Those few thousands have friends and relations already here who would vote to keep it going.

The two hundred odd Sri Lankans on a non leaky boat in Indonesia for the last 6 months are apparently moving ashore.
The Indonesia Gov. said they weren't happy that the Australian Embassy staff didn't appear to help broker the deal.
