SkyWater are in a great position (quite literally) being in the US and being a part of the onshoring of the industry efforts. The R&D they are referencing there is likely things like the 3DSoC project with DARPA (https://www.darpa.mil/program/three-dimensional-monolithic-system-on-a-chip). Quite literally teeing themselves up to be a driver of the industry (given the initiatives play out successfully). I don't think they've spread their bets too thin but are leveraging capabilities from very capable partnerships like the aforementioned DARPA and what we're quite familiar with, Weebit (and the expertise we have).
Another interesting tidbit, not sure if anyone has posted this here: https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/us-department-of-defense-and-globalfoundries-partner-to-secure-supply-of-chips-critical-to-national-security-systems-301537618.html
Globalfoundries have a number of 22nm node capable foundries. The DoD have a clear strong interest in ReRAM. SkyWater currently do not have the smaller nodes GF have on offer. Although not exactly a "household name", I think a tape-out on 22nm at GF could be on the cards in a big way. And an additional sign up by Intel to our now further derisked 130nm offering (the most popular node in 2021) in the first quarter of next year.
For 2022:
"Despite the world’s focus on bleeding edge chips, the majority of semiconductor consumption is in older nodes: 90% of the semiconductor market is nodes larger than 60nm and 23% of it is nodes larger than 180nm."
from https://benjaminreinhardt.com/semiconductors
We're focusing on the big market first while positing ourselves as a very capable technology of choice for the future advanced chip demand.
This year is going to be a ripper imo.
