01/03/2023 [21:14], Gennady DetinichThe Israeli company Weebit Nano announced the release of a demo chip with a built-in ReRAM memory unit. The chip is manufactured using a 22-nm process technology, which has become a record for reducing the process technology for the production of flash memory for embedded applications - controllers and similar chips. The solution was released on FD-SOI wafers by the French institute CEA-Leti and is ready for qualification tests, but there were no customers for the technology, and no.
According to the developer, the 22 nm process technology is considered the most common in the world, while no one produces embedded flash memory blocks on this process technology, at least in series. Indeed, Samsung has adapted the production of embedded eMRAM memory to production on FD-SOI wafers with technological standards of 28 nm. With the same standards, Everspin eMRAM controllers are produced on GlobalFoundries lines.
One Intel company at one time introduced an experimental 22-nm chip with an eMRAM block, but soon it completely abandoned the development and production of flash memory in all its manifestations.
We emphasize that we are talking about promising types of non-volatile memory, the further scaling of which is still in question. At the same time, such memory, and ReRAM in particular, promise a conditionally infinite number of rewriting cycles, which smart peripherals from sensors to AI will need. Also in the set of important properties is resistance to changes in environmental conditions, radiation and many other interferences, not to mention higher energy efficiency and performance.
The new test controller with Weebit Nano memory block contains all the necessary blocks for testing the performance of all subsystems of the chip. The ReRAM array built into the controller has a capacity of 8 Mbit. The controller includes control logic based on the RISC-V architecture, decoders, I/O elements, and an error correction code (ECC) execution unit.
In April last year, a similar test chip was released using a 28nm process technology. Now the company has taken the next step. Unfortunately, nothing is known about the development clients, if any. Weebit Nano previously promised to start production at customers in China and South Korea, but none of this has been confirmed.
