Well in my view the debate is being driven by emmissions, namely CO2 emmissions.
We currently produce 90MT or so a year of hydrogen. 99% of that is via steam methane reforming. There is roughly 7 to 8 tonne of CO2 produced for every tonne of H2 in this process.
So...theres a massive problem producing H2. A large part of that is for fertiliser/ammonia production which we will not be reducing. Very important feedstock for that to maintain food production. So in my view, and the view of a number of concerned scientists, is that we must decarbonise this H2 production as soon as possible. This is going to remove huge amounts of CO2 emmissions from food cycle.
Then, we need to look for other hard to abate industries where H2 could be used. Steel making is the next big one to hit.
Energy storage and production is not going to make as much of a difference. The inefficiency of it to make and use Hydrogen actually drives a huge increase in energy inout demand, which therefore uses up large amounts of green energy which we need for much more.
Battery tech and storage needs much better abilities. I know. There's alot going on but we do need seasonal energy storage. We don't at the moment.
Has anyone here worked with hydrogen before?
