Looking at the map above, I was thinking about why Qantas is so keen to buy out Alliance. The map makes it clearer.
Qantas must be petrified if Virgin were to merge with Alliance. Adding the 70 aircraft of Alliance to the 80+ fleet of Virgin would give the reach to really take Qantas head on. I see the move of QAN to takeover AQZ as the most anti competitive move of all, buying out the company to prevent competition.
News is breaking of Virgin's owners sounding out the ASX for a possible IPO. It is going to be an interesting year ahead.
