I know mate but you don't just drain the 2.2km x 7m of water - they would have to drain the whole area or put in a 2.2km long levies to hold back the water ?
I don't know mate - it just seems too much effort and ground impact to me.
IMO Underground mining is likely the case so the water shouldn't be an issue.
