I think K-Mart are showing they've thought it through. Most people who feign indignation at non-recognition of some trumped-up holiday would be there in a flash if they were serving free beer.
Sydney Day, on 26 January 1788, a day which many Australians remember as when Captain (wrong, he was a lieutenant at the time) Cook discovered Australia (wrong again, he first arrived years earlier, but was beaten here by several others).
It should be celebrated by all loyal Sydneysiders. I'm to queezy to explain to foreigners that we celebrate the day 11 ships arrived in an unsuitable port just North of Cronulla ... another stuff-up. And where can you see scale models of all 11 ships? Museum of Sydney of course. And where do they have ferries named after most of those ships? Sydney!
I learnt from an independent news channel that in early May 1788, several of the FF (Charlotte, Lady Penrhyn and Scarborough) set sail for China, and henceforth, the Chinese always celebrate their arrival there with dim-sims and sweet & sour chicken.
