My take on NHC's special dividend ploy is that the Directors don't want to set a pattern or train of dividends in motion that can't be sustained. The past announcements say the dividend is whatever say 40c per share but given our huge profits we will kindly give back an added payment of say 30c which we call "special". instead they could treat shareholders as adults rather than as toddlers and say our huge profits are windfall type events and may not be sustainable. However, as part of our policy to pay x% of NPAT , here is the dividend of 70c per share.
