On the iron ore side, Pallinghurst is in talks with iron ore players in southwest Australia to consolidate projects like Mt Bevan, Mt Richardson, Mt Forrest and Wiluna West or work together in some way to boost exports from that area through the Esperance harbour to 20 million or 25 million tonnes from eight million tonnes now. It would need an expansion of the railway and enlarged port capacoty, something Pallinghurst or the others just can�t afford to do on their own.

Its not easy, I dont want to mislead you. You are dealing with listed companies and each one has its turf it wants to protect. None of them are viable as iron ore producers on their own, but together we can have a 20, 25 million tonne export business,Gilbertson said.

The ASX-listed Jupiter Mines Ltd is the vehicle for iron ore and manganese, and potentially coking coal. Pallinghurst Co-Investors will own around 85% of Jupiter once the Tshipi manganese transaction is completed in the first half of this year, giving Pallinghurst Resources around 18% of Jupiter.

Tshipi is a $200m South African manganese project that will come into production within the next two years and export two million tonnes of raw ore. The longer term plan is to build a smelter, but electricity constraints and pricing in the country need to be fully assessed....
