There was an admission at the inquiry today from a former lawyer at Centrelink that they were effectively running an extortion racket. She admitted that they knew income averaging produced inaccurate data, but the only way they could increase the number of "interventions" dramatically was to income average. So they decided to threaten people without regard to whether or not it could be established that they owed money, on the basis of a method they knew to be inaccurate. Anything to give the appearance of being tough on people on welfare irrespective of how many people they drove to suicide in the process.
