Apart from vested interest, Gates claims that "if the US was completely nuclear powered- it's a few rooms worth of total waste".
Given that currently 19% of US power is nuclear, then the current figure of 4530m3 of waste generated annually would be 25,000m3 if all power in the US were nuclear.
A 100 m2 home contains about 250m3, so his "few rooms" figure is actually more like 100 homes of nuclear waste annually and still with no permanent storage.
If the apoplectic reaction, by our own nuclear experts, to a tiny nuclear capsule that fell off the back of a truck is any indication, 100 homes annually is a vast increase.
