My view is that it is difficult and expensive to patent to cover all eventualities and I suspect that is what Idan is referring to when mentioning the Finance Dept. involvement. There is a balance to be made by spending on Patent Attorneys and patenting and using that money to build a brand and stake a position in the market, before competitors.

Software can be difficult to patent because it's difficult to cover all possible solutions and secondly there are countries that don't recognise patent protection and will just use the IP regardless of patent.

So it becomes a balancing act to perhaps protect the IP in significant markets like EU and US, build in protections to prevent the knowledge becoming widely known and bulding the business to become a dominant leader before competitors catch up and continue to innovate to stay a step a head all the time.
