Boseto mine to generate own power
28 April, 2010
MAUN - Boseto copper mine, which is a subsidiary of Discovery Metals Limited (DML) has resolved to generate its own power for its plant near Toteng village about 80 km from Maun.
According to January-March quarterly report released by the company, there has been evaluation for alternative power generation at the site including diesel, heavy fuel oil, generator sets and coal fired power stations.
The Company has concluded that, for a relatively small additional investment, a site based coal fired power station will be the most economic alternative, the report reads. The report details that the proposed solution can generate power for well under US 10 cents per kilowatt hour.
It further states that discussions were held with the Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, Mr Ponatshego Kedikilwe, regarding the countrys grid power supply and the alternative of applying for a license to self generate power on site.
Boseto says it is awaiting the Environmental and Social Assessment study (ESIA) which has been submitted to the Department of Environmental Affairs for approval.
An External Independent review report concluded that the ESIA was developed with reference to relevant Botswana legislation and thus should meet the requirements of the Department of Environmental Affairs. The mine has also announced the successful delineation of groundwater resources which are more than sufficient to meet the processing and other operational needs of the Project.
According to mine officials, the first concentrate for sale are expected by end of 2011. BOPA
