Reg, I don't post for ticks. But I was getting plenty and would get plenty again were it not for character assassination style posts - many people believe mischaracterisations that are not corrected - and I simply don't have the time and patience to correct everything that is placed into my mouth by other people. Not literally placed in my mouth - they can't do that but they can misrepresent what I say.

Long experience has taught me that on HotCopper in partticular I have to treat each HotCopper nick like its a representation of the person behind it - and the person behind it might not be of good character anymore than anyone we meet in real life might not be of good character.

Some HotCopper nicks are effectively damned in my mind - they will never get a reply. And that has nothing to do with what stocks they hold or with whether they agree with me or not on things which are matter or fact or matter of opinion. I reserve the personal right to make a decision on who I think is worth responding too.

If a damned nick makes a point that I think needs rebutting in the interests of the truth I'll rebut the argument but I will never answer the questions put to me by a damned nick. And I do the damning and I do it on character grounds as I assess the character through reading the posts and observing the poster behind the nick. I've damned at least one for ticking ad hominem, another for admitting they were anothers thrall. One for being a serial vilifier of many posters including me.

We each are sovereigns of ourselves Reg. I don't claim high moral ground (but I do try to stay above the really low moral stuff some seem to wade into with enthusiasm) - stuff like don't say things about others or put words into their mouths they never say is not high moral ground - its a basic moral level that pretty much every human community comes to recognize is worth establishing as a norm.

Stuff about not using ad hominem is practical - it serves the community to not use ad hominem. Ditto stuff like - don't bare false withness - its literally about as old as the bible - and you don't have to believe in the bible and I personally don't to know that some long standing moral values are long standing because they make sense.

Please never mistake me for wanting the ticks of sycophants (false flatterers) and scoundrels. And never assume because I agree or disagree with what someone writes on matters of fact or opinion that I don't like or do like the poster on character grounds.

If you want me to talk about something feel free to ask but I'm usually already talking about the stuff of interest to me and you'll need a pretty good - interesting and appealing diversion to divert me - even assuming you aren't (and you definately aren't) on a list of nicks I don't want to respond to anyway.

To be clear - like most people - I automatically get to like people I get to know - unless they give me a reason not to. Its the propinquity principle. Plenty on HotCopper do give a reason to dislike them in occasional posts and reasons to like them in other occasional posts (most of us are a mix of likeability and not likeability - but some of us could be scoundrels that should be in jail or institutions to protect us from harming the rest of us - but HotCopper access is available to them too until it isn't) - few give a constant signal, but some do.

The first time, I let the mistake slide but after awhile I like to speak up because errors in the proper use of English can become contagious....
