why is the SP important? you are right there are less shares on issue. Some companies (small start ups) like having more shares on issue (with a lower SP) because it provides more liquidity in the market. The thinking is that it is easier to trade large volumes of shares at lower values than higher values. And some companies don't care.
You'll sometimes see larger companies do stock splits to achieve the same thing.
