Surely if they pushed the price down it benefits the holders as more shares can be bought at a lower price. Im not quite seeing how it benefits shorts sellers and institutional investors? Having a buyback would substantially negatively affect short sellers, as the price has less upward pressure without which is what short sellers want. Plus they have less available shares to buy back in the future when they need to cover.
