You aren't confined to one approach; you can pick and choose which approach to use. I alternate between FIFO and LIFO depending on what minimises my capital gains.
The difficulty is usually just with tracking, so if you were swapping between LIFO and average cost it would be more difficult, but between FIFO and LIFO it's manageable.
