So, back to the original AC induction motor. Until prices of other metals go up, and rare earths go back down, then they'll be back to the rare earths motor. I really don't see any new breakthrough innovation here, just a way of stabilising the Tesla motor manufacturing costs at the expense of only a little bit of performance. We are yet to see any concrete evidence of exactly what type of motor Elon is talking about; sure it may be new and shiny, but it's not going to be a REE killer replacing EV motors throughout the market. Time will tell, and I'm probably going to be shown wrong. But I'm hedging my bet that Elon is full of enough hot air to launch one of his Tesla's into space.
