Because there is always some down side risk - drilling dry wells, falling price of oil (short term), external risks etc...
It's all about risk management and how an individual reacts to the perceived risks. In a global event even the good stocks go down, down down.. I sold out of lots of stocks last week recently am waiting for an entry but am a bit wary of the pending (possible) - World Currency Crisis.
Its all a bit of a gamble is it not?
