20m ton annual iron ore operation from a single mine is not small even by Australian standards. Impact on local environment could be order of magnitude larger than the proposed graphite mine.
The difference is that it's an existing mine applying for permit extension, and shutting it down will mean Europe losing one of it's biggest iron ore mines. But it's also interesting to note that, unlike natural graphite, which just got named as CRM & SRM, iron ore is neither.
