I always draw the analogy with an African waterhole. A herd of wildebeest can be peacefully drinking at the waterhole until one animal smells a lion, then the whole friggin lot panic and bolt, even though only the one wildebeest will make a meal. Shareholders are the same; one whiff of trouble somewhere in the world and half the buggers rush for the exits. If no-one sold lower the prices couldn't fall. Greed and fear - the lifeblood of stockmarkets.
