The Swan Hills Synfuels Project has been named the top energy infrastructure project in Canada by Alberta Oil - The Business of Energy Magazine (April / May 2010 edition).

The local project received the number one spot for its innovative new model for clean power generation putting Whitecourt and Woodlands County on the map in the energy industry across Canada.


The publication rated Canada's standout energy infrastructure projects in terms of green ideals and innovative technology, size, complexity, and cost. All twenty-five of the energy projects recognized prove that there is overwhelming demand for clean energy world-wide.

Whitecourt Mayor Trevor Thain said the projects could have national ramifications. "The leading energy technology utilized in this project will continue to showcase Canada as a leader in energy innovation." Thain said.

The Swan Hills Synfuels Project is a unique project that will turn underground coal into synthetic gas (syngas) for power generation. This $1.5-billion commercial project is the first of its kind in North America, drilling to 1,400 metres below surface, and is the deepest underground coal gasification project ever conducted in the world. The project will also capture up to 1.3 million tonnes per year of carbon dioxide to enhance the recovery of conventional oil in the area.

Woodlands County Mayor Jim Rennie was happy the project will bring an additional source of employment for the area.

"This project is an environmentally friendly producer of electricity, and uses cutting edge technology to lower the carbon footprint. This is a truly win-win situation for all" Rennie said.

It is anticipated that the Swan Hills gasification plant will create 600 construction jobs over the next two years, and 60 full-time jobs at the plant. Construction of the power generation plant, in the Whitecourt and Woodlands County area, is expected to create 300 construction jobs and 30 full-time positions.
