Roller coaster ride last night in the US markets. At one stage, up 200 points and then dived to be down 100 points before a late recovery.
The market was boosted by treasury secretary Janet Yellen's comment that the US government would take any actions that were warranted to protect bank deposits - this led to the late rally.
European exchanges were slightly negative at the close (before Janet Yellen's statement).
DOW closed up 75 points and the NASDAQ Biotech index had a healthy gain of 49 points at the end of trading.
Janet Yellen's comments might point to a better result on the ASX today.
