The median house price in Sydney (all suburbs of the metropolitan area /basin of Sydney) is ~$400,000 -425,000.
The same for Melbourne is ~$300,000 -325,000.
The average price for Sydney housing seems to refer to a smaller area of the Sydney basin (ie: within "x"km of the CBD).
Housing prices are high, and so too is the the level AWE /AWOTE required to meet average monthly mortgage repayments. But, I am sure that everybody out west, down Penrith way, or south of SAC (etc) would love to know this morning that their housing prices have gone up >150% overnight.
Everything in context, everything in moderation, everything on an informed basis (and that is where the media fails each and every time in reporting matters of this kind - journalism without responsibility).
