Deposits of the rare element scandium have been discovered at a site in north Queensland.

The element is used in the aerospace and automotive industries.

Scandium has been found during exploration near Greenvale, west of Townsville.

Metallica Metals spokesman Andrew Gillies says the company is looking into the feasibility of a scandium and nickel-cobalt mine.

"We've done probably at least 20 holes that have intercepted high-grade scandium and it's open and we'll be bringing the drill rigg back there in the next week or so," he said.

"But we're very confident that it'll be a similar size and possibly even a higher grade than cocomet."
