There is lots of politics happening behind the scenes
Offshore markets are very worried in regards to implications of the Feds changing the trigger from annually to quarterly so basically they can't guarantee their gas supply won't be affected by export limitations from Australia. The feds solution is to guarantee East coast supply and to set trigger before each quarter. If triggered that would set limit of export from QLD for instance and then they would open up increased export from WA and Darwin. That assumes Darwin actually has gas supply for export . So on a quartely basis feds can trigger and nationalise supply limiting any pointof export and also change limits in others . It assumes there is capacity at export terminals and also ships at call to change route etc etc. Do these numbskulls in federal Govt understand that in industry you plan out 24 months ahead for the simplest stuff let alone logistics and energy storage / capacity. Suppliers have no idea if they will be held to contract pena;ties etc and then become known as unreliable. Force Majoure in play on complete contracts? Clients of course have long term contracts and want supply and have planned a decade out.
A simple unexpected shutdown and a stupid govt taking a hardline will decimate Australias reputation.
With no one knowing if existing contracts will be honored and true affect if government pulls trigger Australia is simply being seen as an unrelaible trading partner for energy supplies. Much of the funding for the projects indirectly comes from countries being exported to as wella nd that may dry up changing cost structure
I hear all the so called green supporters cheering that the gas industry has insecurity- well be careful is all I can suggest.
You now have agovernment who seems to want to overide international contracts and come solar, hydrogen ammonia etc etc which are all seen as the future the government will do the same. So you for instance as an example will have a massive solar farm with a export cable and if Feds say energy is needed in Australia they simply instruct switch to Singapore to be switched off ? This assumes you can actually get the stranded electricity assett into the Eastern Grid - perhaps they can run an extension lead!!!!!!
All this bullcrap leads to higher energy costs getting locked in for Australians and Australian industry and insecurity at every level. Well done government.
Gas industry just starting to speak up in response to international partners and the insecurity at teh highest leves of politics
As for enviro approvals - teh green folk need to have a bit wider reading rather than green propoganda and actually understand the system.
