To make Synthetic graphite, Coking coal is crushed down to size, then heated to over 2500’C for a time between hours or days then ground down to a “correct” size, spherenised and coated with carbon powder to smooth imperfections. Crystal size within the graphite grain affects cycle life, charge time. Manufacturers can alter the crystal size by adjusting temp and cooking time, & this would be the fine tuning Chris speaks of, & different for every customer.
Natural graphite the crystal size within the grain cannot be adjusted, hence not a lot of graphite deposits are even suitable for long life anode, nor can it compete with high grade synthetic anode & as you refer manufacturers may blend. Then silicon doping etc

My point is active cathode material ingredients, can be tested much easier than graphite for anode. Even changes in feedstock for sg will effect the end product (why they’re now testing feedstock for the JV), This is all the fine tuning, requiring in product testing and validation.

Chris B couple of days ago to ****** “We need to understand who our customers are and products we’ll be making with our next facility for the Loan program and other financing. We continue to progress our sampling programs, our qualification programs are with essentially everyone who is in the EV and ESS sector within the mainstream in North America. We’re looking at when we can bring those to binding agreements for our next facility. It’s absolutely a critical focus within the company. Management and the board we are comfortable with where we are. The unfortunate truth is we dont get to give any clear indications of this to the market in any disclosable way until we reach that end state”
At end of the day, it’s up to the individual if they back them or not. I see the JV as a tick in confidence, ability to scale, but it’s taken since 21 to get the nod on that. I do agree they’ve taken longer than they planned, and I think they could communicate better, but that’s the CEOs explanation on this, above.
