There are as many answers as there are people: each person's situation is different.
For any number of reasons, many folks may have not been liquid when the biggest dip happened. It didn't last long.
Also, famously, people struggle to pick the bottom: how many people hoped it might just go a little bit lower when instead, it bounced back into a normal range around 5?
And then there is the question you raised yourself: selfishness. It is not selfless to choose to put the money into the coffers of the company you are invested in. It is simply not shortsighted. I like to think of it in terms of the tragedy of the commons. If everyone bought on market only, the results could have been very poor optics for WBT and could have caused them to miss vital opportunities at this important stage of their journey.
With all this in mind, and with the final SP yoink upwards capturing those who had waited to the last minute... I'm not surprised at this result.
