We don't know if at some level DNA is reactive via some unknown as yet mechanism. It has been demonstrated and papers have been written that says that there is evidence that DNA does more than mutate at some set rate. It was a found to accelerate mutations in precisely the right area of the DNA that appears to afford the animal an advantage relative to a changing environment. So neither you nor I have a clue as to the more intricate workings of DNA.

Mutations indeed occur randomly and I guess this is like keeping a motor running until you need to go somewhere, or evolve more rapidly.

DNA can only alter the conformation of an animal at a rate that can keep up with change. If change is too rapid the animal becomes extinct.

And yes I speculate my tits off.

As for consciousness and mind, there is a growing school of research that suggests that the mind is more like a regulator than the source of human consciousness, or higher consciousness. Worth a read, there's some very interesting work coming out.Higher consciousness appears to not exist when the brain is damaged because it is the gateway, the conduit of high consciousness.

By Cause I mean, God, but God immediately conjures up a mental image, even with atheists. Atheists produce a god, gods, or use one of many imagined up by religion to then reject. I have no real concept of God, but have no problem accepting that a force of purpose and will is the directing, causing agent that produces the exactitudes of existence. I don't believe the likes of human consciousness can come out the end of evolution unless it is also an aspect of the beginning of evolution.

I don't think our existence is a mystery at all. Clearly we were evolved into being for a reason. In a sense the universe does not exist unless a being like us can experience it.
