What is so far just a weekly Melbourne-Perth AZJ-TGE intermodal train should pass through Ararat at about 1820 AEST on Saturday 6 May 2023.
This week it has 83 wagons, up from 82 in previous weeks. As with any freight operator (rail, road, sea or air) there isn't an identical amount of loading each way, but we can be confident the AZJ locomotives don't pull empty wagons around to 'play trains'.
It'll be interesting over coming months to observe if AZJ can 'fill' the empty wagons at the train's rear with non-TGE loading. One suspects this will take time, and naturally it's also dependent on the economy's health, the relative cost of rail freight across the Nullarbor compared to road and sea options and whether competitors like Pacific National and SCT (both rail) lower their prices per tonne-kilometre.
Insurance costs have allegedly been rising for heavy trucks. I'm unsure why.
