I can't see why the Head of Sate need be a politician. The Crown has only ever played a ceremonial role in Australia, when needed to do more the Queen failed miserably. The failure of her representative in 1975 was a rare smudge on a generally unblemished succession of fine politician-appointed Australians who have been good Governors-General and would have made equally good Presidents if Australia had been a republic. The Constitution in any case ensures that none of them can outlast their welcome.
