It's bloody chalcocite, a copper sulphide mineral, not some poxy oxide or carbonate. The shallow open pit probably took the problematic stuff.
Chalcocite floats well and gives you a high grade concentrate which is desirable particularly if deleterious elements are low. Prominent Hill chalcocite con was in demand despite its moderate uranium grade. It was used to dilute the arsenic grades in problematic cons from South America whilst increasing the average copper grade.
